Tie Guan Yin, also known as Iron Goddess of Mercy, is a type of Oolong tea originating from Anxi, Fujian, China. One popular origin legend involves a poor tea farmer who offered tea to an iron statue of Goddess (Bodhisattva) of Mercy every morning at a rundown temple. One night, the Bodhisattva appeared to him in a dream and revealed that there is a hidden treasure behind the temple in a cave – a single, extraordinary tea shoot. She told him that this treasure was to be shared with his community. The next morning, he found the tea shoot at the exact location mentioned in his dream. Shocked and thrilled, he brought it back home, nurtured it and shared cuttings with his fellow farmers. From then on, the tea was named Tie Guan Yin 铁观音.
